Young researchers of INQUIRE

Matthew Williams

Positon: MPhil Research Student

Partner institute: University of Cambridge

Research focus: ‘Measuring the oxidative potential of respirable particles’

Using analytical methods such as LC-MS and ICP-MS to explore the oxidative potential of pollutant metal ions. Focussed on the oxidative effect of these metal ions on antioxidants such as glutathione and ascorbic acid found in epithelial lung fluid.

Work package(s):  WP3

Role in INQUIRE: MPhil Research Student

What got me interested in research in the first place: I was drawn to research through a deep love for exploring science, especially chemistry, and the want to contribute to mitigating issues such as pollution and the climate that I feel strongly about. I hope to get more involved in communicating science over the course of my MPhil – I worked as a secondary school chemistry teacher last year and would love to be able to build on the skills I developed there in academic research.

My favourite thing about being a researcher: I love the freedom of research, where there is always an end-goal in mind but the way of getting there is rarely direct. Being able to follow tangents along the way to see if they lead to an interesting place is a wonderful part of research. It acts as a great reminder that so much of this is about bettering our understanding of the world we live in and exploring our curiosities, as that will always be the greatest motivator.

Fun fact about myself: I love music, theatre, and handstands!

Hobbies: I spend my spare time onstage in shows and writing music for theatre and short films.
